Lunugamvehera National Park is one of the main national parks in Sri Lanka, covering an area of 24,000 hectares. The dry-mixed forests are rich in biodiversity and a home to a large number of wild elephants, Sri Lankan sloth bears, Sri Lankan leopards, fishing cats, spotted dears, wild buffaloes, grey mongooses and several species of birds. Located on the southern border of the national park, the Lunugamvehera reservoir plays an important role in this ecosystem.
